What is the procedure of Orthodontic treatment?
The specialised dentist, Orthodontist plans the treatment for the individual needs. He fixes the brackets either made of steel or ceramic on the teeth and joins them with wires, elastic. Every month the doctor will change the wires/elastic as per the individual needs. The average treatment duration may be 12-18 months. After the teeth are repositioned in new place, a fixed or removable retainer is given, and this needs to worn for 8-12 months depending on individual requirement. During the treatment there shall be few food restrictions, special oral hygiene instructions.
Will there be any discomfort during the Orthodontic treatment?
The discomfort depends on individual pain threshold capacity. Initially for a day or two one may feel the discomfort and upon activation every month. Such discomfort is trivial, and tolerable with mild painkillers. At times, ulcer may be developed. Doctor may suggest analgesic/anaesthetic gel application for the ulcer which usually heals with 3-5 days.
